GPA Formula
GPA is a weighted average of grade points across all courses:
- Grade Quality Points = Grade Points × Credit Hours (per course)
- Semester GPA = Sum of Grade Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
- Cumulative GPA = (Prior GPA × Prior Credits + Semester GPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Credits
For example, if you earn an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course, a B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course, and a C (2.0) in a 3-credit course: GPA = (4.0×3 + 3.3×4 + 2.0×3) ÷ (3+4+3) = (12 + 13.2 + 6) ÷ 10 = 31.2 ÷ 10 = 3.12.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is GPA calculated?
GPA is a weighted average of grade points and credit hours. For each course, multiply the grade points by the credit hours. Sum these across all courses, then divide by total credit hours. For example: A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and B (3.0) in a 4-credit course gives (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ (3+4) ≈ 3.43.
What is a good GPA?
On a 4.0 scale, 3.5+ is generally excellent (Dean's List range). A 3.0 is considered good academic standing. Below 2.0 often means academic probation. Requirements vary by school and program.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Multiply your prior GPA by prior credits, add (current semester GPA × current credits), then divide by total credits. This calculator does it automatically when you fill in the "Previous Cumulative GPA" section.
What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA covers only the current term's courses. Cumulative GPA is the weighted average across all terms. Most employers and grad schools look at cumulative GPA, though semester GPA can demonstrate an upward trend.
Does an A+ give more points than an A?
On the standard 4.0 scale used here, both A+ and A are worth 4.0 grade points. Some institutions award 4.3 for A+. Check your school's grading policy if you are unsure.
Can I use this for non-US grading scales?
Yes. Use the scale selector to switch to the 5.0, 10.0, or 100-point scale. The calculator converts standard letter grades proportionally to the chosen scale.
Is my data stored or sent anywhere?
No. All GPA calculations happen entirely in your browser using JavaScript. The courses, grades, and credits you enter are never sent to or stored on any server — not even anonymously.
