The Sales Tax Formulas

  • Add tax: Total = Pre-tax price × (1 + Rate ÷ 100). For a $50 item at 8%: $50 × 1.08 = $54.00.
  • Tax amount (adding): Tax = Pre-tax price × Rate ÷ 100. For $50 at 8%: $50 × 0.08 = $4.00.
  • Reverse (find pre-tax): Pre-tax = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). For a $54 total at 8%: $54 ÷ 1.08 = $50.00.
  • Tax amount (reversing): Tax = Total − Pre-tax. For the same example: $54 − $50 = $4.00.

Common mistake: When reversing, do not multiply the total by the tax rate and subtract — this overstates the pre-tax price. Always divide by (1 + rate), never subtract rate% of the total.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate sales tax on a price?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the sales tax rate as a decimal and add the result to the price. Formula: Total = Pre-tax × (1 + Rate / 100). For example, a $80 item at 7% tax: $80 × 1.07 = $85.60 total, with $5.60 in tax.

How do I find the pre-tax price from a total?

Divide the total by (1 + the rate as a decimal). For example, $85.60 ÷ 1.07 = $80.00 pre-tax. A common error is to subtract rate% of the total — this gives the wrong answer because the gross total already has an inflated denominator.

Why are the state preset rates "combined" averages?

US sales tax has two layers: a state rate and additional county or city rates. The combined average is the weighted average of all state + local rates across a state — which is what most buyers actually pay. For example, California's state rate is 7.25% but the combined average including local taxes is 8.68%. For your exact ZIP code rate, check your state's department of revenue.

Which US states have no sales tax?

Five states have no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Alaska allows local taxes, so some Alaskan cities do charge sales tax. For states not in the presets, enter your local rate in the custom rate field.

Is this calculator accurate enough for invoicing?

The presets are useful for quick estimates, but sales tax rules vary by product type, exemption, and exact locality. For invoicing, accounting, or tax compliance, always verify the applicable rate with your state's department of revenue or a qualified tax professional.
