AVIF to JPG Converter

Convert AVIF images to JPG, PNG, or WebP for free — no sign-up, no uploads, nothing to install. Drop your AVIF files in, pick an output format, and download your results in seconds. Everything runs right in your browser, so your images never leave your device.

How It Works

This free online AVIF converter processes your images entirely in your browser — no file is ever sent to a server.

  1. 1. Pick your output format

Choose JPG for the best compatibility — it works everywhere, from email to social media to Windows Explorer. Pick PNG if you need lossless quality or transparency. Choose WebP if you are optimising images for a website and want smaller files than JPG. When JPG or WebP is selected, use the quality slider to find the right balance between file size and sharpness.

  2. 2. Drop your AVIF images

Drag and drop one or more .avif files onto the upload area, or click to browse. You can add as many images as you need. Nothing leaves your device at this point.

  3. 3. Convert in your browser

Hit Convert and your browser decodes each AVIF file using its built-in AV1 image decoder, renders it to an HTML5 Canvas element, then encodes the result as JPG, PNG, or WebP — no upload, no waiting, just instant results on your device.

  4. 4. Download your files

Click Download next to any file to save it, or use the Download all button to grab everything at once. Files are saved with the correct extension and ready to use anywhere.

What Is an AVIF File?

AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. It is a modern image format developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) and based on the AV1 video codec. AVIF offers dramatically better compression than older formats — typically 50% smaller than JPEG and 20% smaller than WebP at the same visual quality — while also supporting HDR, wide colour gamut, and alpha transparency.

Despite its technical advantages, AVIF's main practical limitation is software compatibility. While all modern browsers support it, many photo editors, messaging apps, and older platforms do not. Converting to JPG or PNG solves this instantly — both are universally supported across every device and application.

When to keep AVIF

If you are delivering images on a modern website where file size matters, AVIF is an excellent choice. All major browsers support it, and the smaller files mean faster page loads and lower bandwidth costs.

When to convert to JPG

Convert to JPG when sharing images with others, uploading to platforms that do not support AVIF, attaching to emails, or using images in any app that shows a blank or broken image for AVIF files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images are never sent to or stored on any server.

Is this AVIF converter free?

Yes, completely free. No account required, no watermarks, and no hidden charges.

Which browsers support AVIF conversion?

AVIF decode is supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16+. If you see a decode error, please update your browser to the latest version.

Will I lose quality converting AVIF to JPG?

At high quality settings (90%+), the difference is invisible to the naked eye. JPG does use lossy compression, so at very low quality settings you may see artefacts. Use the quality slider at 90–95% for the best balance between file size and sharpness.

Can I convert AVIF to PNG to keep transparency?

Yes. Select PNG as the output format and transparency from your AVIF file will be preserved in the converted image. JPG does not support transparency, so any transparent areas will be filled with white.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The tool works in any modern browser on any device — no app or download needed. Chrome and Safari on both iOS and Android support AVIF natively.
