PDF to Plain Text vs Image to Text (OCR)
This tool pulls embedded text from native PDFs — the kind created by word processors, export tools, or any software that generates real, selectable text inside the PDF.
If your PDF is a scanned document — a photo or scan of a physical page — the text is stored as an image, not as characters. This tool won't be able to read it. For that, use the Image to Text (OCR) tool instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my PDF uploaded to your servers?
No. Your file never leaves your device. Extraction happens entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to our servers or stored anywhere.
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free. No account required and no hidden charges.
Does this work with scanned PDFs?
No. This tool reads embedded text from native PDFs. Scanned documents store pages as images and need an OCR tool — try the Image to Text tool on this site.
Which browsers are supported?
This tool works in all modern browsers — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. No plugins or extra software needed.
What is the maximum file size?
Up to 100 MB. Very large PDFs with many pages may take a little longer depending on your device's speed.
Why does the extracted text look different from the PDF?
PDFs store text as positioned characters on a canvas, not as flowing paragraphs. The tool reconstructs lines from those positions as accurately as possible, but complex layouts like columns or tables may not reflow perfectly into plain text.
