Pomodoro Timer
Stay focused with timed work sessions and structured breaks — free, no account needed, and nothing ever leaves your device. Optionally describe your task and let the on-device AI suggest the best interval preset before your session starts.
Interval Presets
Describe your task and the AI will suggest the best interval preset. Runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere.
How It Works
Pick your interval
Choose Standard, Deep Focus, or Light Work — or type your task and let the AI suggest the right one for you.
Start and focus
Hit Start and work until the ring empties. Allow notifications so you're alerted even if you switch tabs.
Take your break
The timer automatically switches to Short Break. After four sessions it switches to Long Break and resets your session dots.
Repeat and build momentum
Keep cycling through sessions. The completed-session counter helps you track your productivity across the day.
How to Use the Pomodoro Timer
- Choose a preset — Standard (25/5/15) for everyday tasks, Deep Focus (50/10/20) for complex work, or Light Work (15/5/10) for admin and reviews.
- Optionally analyze your task — type what you're working on and click Analyze. The on-device AI loads, reads your description and suggests a preset.
- Click Start — the ring countdown begins. Allow browser notifications if prompted so you're alerted when each phase ends.
- Work without distractions — commit to one task for the full session. If something urgent comes up, hit Reset to restart the current session.
- Take every break — breaks are part of the technique. Short breaks prevent fatigue; long breaks (every four sessions) restore deeper concentration.
- Track your sessions — the four dots below the ring show how far through the current cycle you are. The session counter accumulates across mode switches.
Understanding the Three Presets
| Preset | Focus | Short Break | Long Break | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 25 min | 5 min | 15 min | Everyday tasks, studying, writing |
| Deep Focus | 50 min | 10 min | 20 min | Complex code, research, creative work |
| Light Work | 15 min | 5 min | 10 min | Email, admin, reviews, quick tasks |
What Is the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique was created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The name comes from the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used as a student (pomodoro is Italian for tomato). The idea is simple: time-box your work into focused 25-minute blocks, take a 5-minute break, and after four blocks take a longer break of 15–20 minutes.
The structure works because it makes large tasks feel manageable, creates a natural checkpoint every 25 minutes to reassess priorities, and prevents the mental fatigue that comes from working for hours without pause. Research on attention and cognitive load consistently supports the value of regular breaks for sustained performance.
About the On-Device AI
The optional AI preset suggestion uses a 123 MB text classification model (DistilBERT, Apache 2.0 license) that runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly. On your first use it is downloaded once and stored in your browser's local storage — subsequent uses load instantly from there, with no internet connection required.
Crucially, the model is disposed immediately after it analyses your task description — before your focus session starts. This means the model does not sit in RAM consuming memory while you work. Your task description is never sent to any server. The analysis happens entirely on your own device.
Features
- Visual countdown ring: A circular SVG ring depletes in real time as the session progresses, making your remaining time immediately clear at a glance.
- Three interval presets: Standard, Deep Focus, and Light Work cover the most common productivity scenarios without requiring manual configuration.
- Session progress tracker: Four dots below the ring show your position in the current cycle. The timer automatically switches to Long Break after four completed focus sessions.
- Browser notifications: Alerts you when each phase ends — even if the tab is in the background — so you don't have to watch the screen.
- On-device AI (optional): A 123 MB open-source model analyzes your task and suggests the right preset.
- Privacy-first: No data is uploaded, stored, or tracked. No account or sign-up required.
- Works offline: The timer works without an internet connection. The AI also works offline after the initial one-time model download.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Pomodoro Sessions
- Work on one task per session. The technique loses its power if you multitask — each session should have a single, clearly defined goal.
- Protect your sessions. Silence notifications from other apps, close unneeded browser tabs, and let colleagues know you're in a focused block.
- Actually take the breaks. Step away from the screen, stretch, or look out a window. A break spent scrolling social media does not restore cognitive capacity the same way.
- Adjust the intervals. The 25/5 default works well for most people, but there's nothing sacred about it. If you find yourself getting into flow just as the timer ends, try the Deep Focus preset instead.
- Track your sessions. Counting completed Pomodoros gives you a concrete measure of your productive output — helpful for planning and motivation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is any of my data uploaded or stored?
No. The timer runs entirely in your browser. The optional on-device AI task analysis also runs locally — your task description is never sent anywhere.
What is the Pomodoro Technique?
A time management method where you work in focused intervals (traditionally 25 minutes) separated by short breaks. After four intervals you take a longer break. The structure sustains focus and prevents burnout.
How does the AI preset suggestion work?
A 123 MB AI model downloads once to your browser (with your permission), classifies your task description using keyword heuristics and a sentiment model, then recommends Standard, Deep Focus, or Light Work. The model is immediately discarded from memory after the suggestion — it does not run during your session.
Does the timer work in the background?
The countdown continues running when you switch tabs. However, browsers may throttle JavaScript timers in background tabs. For critical timing accuracy, keep the tab active — or allow browser notifications so you're alerted at the end of each phase regardless of tab focus.
Can I customise the intervals?
The three presets cover the most common configurations. If none of them suit you exactly, choose the closest preset and use it as a starting point — the Standard, Deep Focus, and Light Work intervals are the most researched and recommended durations for Pomodoro-style sessions.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The Pomodoro timer works fully offline with no internet connection required. The optional AI feature needs a one-time download; after that it also works offline from your browser's local IndexedDB storage.
