Adding vs. Removing VAT — The Maths
Both operations use the same rate — the direction is what changes:
- Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate/100) — multiply the net price by (1 + the rate expressed as a decimal).
- Remove VAT: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate/100) — a common mistake is to multiply by the rate and subtract; the correct method is always to divide.
- Tax amount (adding): Tax = Net × Rate/100
- Tax amount (removing): Tax = Gross − (Gross ÷ (1 + Rate/100))

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between adding VAT and removing VAT?
Adding VAT starts with a net (pre-tax) price and calculates the gross total you pay. For example, £100 at 20% VAT = £120 gross. Removing VAT starts with a gross (tax-inclusive) price and works backwards. For example, £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net + £20 tax.
How do I remove VAT from a price — why not just multiply by the rate?
A common mistake is to multiply the gross price by the VAT rate (e.g., £120 × 20% = £24). This is wrong because the gross total already includes the inflated base. The correct method is to divide by (1 + rate): £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, with £20 tax — not £24.
What is the difference between VAT and GST?
VAT (Value Added Tax) and GST (Goods and Services Tax) are functionally identical — both are multi-stage consumption taxes where the final consumer bears the cost. The difference is purely terminological: VAT is used in the UK and Europe, while GST is used in Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, and New Zealand. The calculator formula is the same either way.
Can I use this for US sales tax?
Yes. While the US has no federal VAT, state and local sales taxes work the same way arithmetically. Select the US preset (set to 8.875% as a NYC example) or type your local rate in the custom field. Note that US sales tax is typically shown separately at checkout rather than included in the displayed price.
